David Marlow

David Marlow has been chief conductor of the Vogtland Philharmonie since 2014 where he is responsible for all their symphonic programmes. After his highly acclaimed debut season featuring works such as Bruckner’s 7th Symphony, Sibelius’ 2nd Symphony and Tchaikovsky’s 6th Symphony, highlights this season include Mahler’s 4th Symphony, Beethoven’s 3rd and 9th Symphonies, Brahms’ 3rd Symphony and Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite.

This season he successfully debuted as guest conductor of the Duisburger Philharmoniker and the Neue Philharmonie Westfalen and was invited back to conduct the Brandenburgische Staatsorchester. In December 2015 he took rehearsals with the Royal Concertgebouw Orkest Amsterdam, stepping in for Andris Nelsons. Next season he will be conducting the Rotterdam Philharmonisch Orkest as well as the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg in addition to continuing his regular collaboration with the WDR Sinfonieorchester and guest conducting, amongst others, the Duisburger Philharmoniker and the Nordwestdeutsche Philharmonie.

He gave his operatic debut at the young age of 21 with “Dialogues des Carmélites” by Poulenc and shortly after began his career at Aachen Opera, where he was entrusted with performances such as “Peter Grimes”, “La Bohème” and “Lohengrin”. He consequently conducted over 200 performances at Chemnitz Opera including “Carmen”, “Faust”, “Hansel and Gretel” and “Die Fledermaus”. At Hagen Opera he conducted numerous productions such as “Madame Butterfly”, “Don Pasquale”, “Don Carlos” as well as Massenet’s “Don Quichotte”.

Since 2010, he has been assistant to Andris Nelsons at the Bayreuther Festival. This summer he will be working with him on the new production of “Parsifal”.

From 2010-2013 he was chorus master of the WDR Rundfunkchor. During this time he collaborated with conductors such as Jukka Pekka Saraste, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Kurt Masur, Daniel Harding, Howard Griffiths, Simon Halsey and Kent Nagano.

David Marlow greatly enjoys discovering new works. He conducted the German premieres of the operas “Pinocchio” by Jonathan Dove, “Selma Jezkova” by Paul Rouders, as well as Ludger Vollmer’s “Lola rennt” (“Run, Lola, Run”). He has conducted several contemporary symphonic works such as “Con brio” by Jörg Widmann, “Industrial” by Moritz Eggert and most recently Toru Takemitsu’s percussion concerto “From Me Flows What You Call Time” with the Philharmonischen Orchester Hagen.

Passionate about music education, David is often involved with music education projects for people of all ages. His programme, where he explains symphonic repertoire in detail, is featured regularly on West German Radio(WDR). Meanwhile numerous programmes, going back to 2014, are all available to listen to online.
