Lothar Seyfarth

Lothar Seyfarth had his first piano lessons in 1938. As an adolescent he took his first steps as a musician in diverse dance orchestras until he decided to study music at the University of Leipzig. He was appointed Conductor at the Theatre of Stralsund, and later-on Music Director at the Theatre of Stendal. Between 1964 and 1967 he was Chief Conductor of the DEFA Symphonic Orchestra, then Conductor of the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra until 1973.

From 1973 until 1979 he worked as Music Director at the German National Theater in Weimar. During the years 1979 and 1980 he was Conductor at the Comic Opera in Berlin. Lothar Seyfarth then became Chief Conductor of the Thuringia National Symphonic Orchestra, a position he filled until 1991. He has been working as a freelance conductor ever since.

The variety of his work allowed him to gain wide-spread experiences in different areas of music, such as opera, operetta, ballet, musical, symphony, chamber music, movie scores and dance music. These experiences enable him to perform within an exceptionally large spectrum ranging from symphonic orchestras to big band. Numerous radio, CD and television productions were created under the direction of Lothar Seyfarth.

Guest appearances abroad led him to almost all countries within Europe as well as to Cuba, North Korea, the former Soviet Union and Australia. His symphonic repertoire encompasses more than 100 pieces from almost 240 composers, among them about 70 composers of the 20th century. Lothar Seyfarth is intensively committed to the reconstruction and performance of forgotten compositions. Since the 2004/2005 season, he is Honorary Conductor of the Vogtland Philharmonic Orchestra Greiz/Reichenbach.
